Dick Van Dyke Makes History as Oldest Daytime Emmy Winner at 98
Legendary actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke has set a new record by winning the 2024 Daytime Emmy Award for guest performer in a daytime drama series at the age of 98.
This accolade, awarded for his role as Timothy Robicheaux, an amnesiac character in Peacock’s Days of Our Lives, makes Van Dyke the oldest recipient in the history of the Daytime Emmys.
The 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, was a significant highlight of the year. Van Dyke took the stage with his characteristic humor and humility.
“I feel like a spy from nighttime television,” he joked, adding, “If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!“
His portrayal of Timothy Robicheaux in a special four-part story arc on Days of Our Lives was memorable.
Van Dyke’s character, described as a “man of mystery” with memory loss, navigates his past with the help of Marlena (Diedre Hall), John Black (Drake Hogestyn), and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols). Notably, Van Dyke’s real-life wife, Arlene Silver, also made a cameo on the show, adding a personal touch to his historic performance.
Van Dyke’s recent win adds to his long list of awards, which includes four Primetime Emmys and a Daytime Emmy from 1984 for his work in children’s programming on CBS Library.
Throughout his career, he has shown great talent and versatility, from his famous role in The Dick Van Dyke Show to his performances in classic movies like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The ceremony, broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, featured appearances by several stars including Kelly Clarkson, Zooey Deschanel, and Jonathan Scott. Melody Thomas Scott and Edward J. Scott were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards, highlighting their significant contributions to the daytime television industry.
Other major winners at the event included General Hospital, which took home four awards, including best daytime drama, best directing, best writing, and a supporting actor award for Robert Gossett.
Thorsten Kaye of The Bold and the Beautiful earned his second consecutive lead actor award, while Michelle Stafford of The Young and the Restless won best actress for her role as Phyllis Summers. Courtney Hope, also from The Young and the Restless, was recognized as the best supporting actress.
The Kelly Clarkson Show continued its dominance in the daytime talk series category, winning its fourth consecutive Emmy. Kelly Clarkson, who moved her show from Los Angeles to New York last year, expressed her gratitude towards NBC for prioritizing mental health.
Entertainment Tonight won for Entertainment News Series, and Be My Guest With Ina Garten was named best Culinary Series. The husband-and-wife team of Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa won daytime talk series host for Live with Kelly and Mark.
The night also paid tribute to past winners and industry legends. Van Dyke received a standing ovation as he used a cane to make his way to the stage, accompanied by his wife, Arlene, who held the trophy.
He humorously mentioned how he ended up on Days of Our Lives through a friend he met at the gym, showcasing his down-to-earth personality and continued passion for acting.
