The basketball world is in mourning after the passing of Jerry West, an iconic figure whose legacy has shaped the sport for generations. West, aged 86, died peacefully in his Los Angeles home on June 12, 2024, leaving behind a storied career and an indelible impact on the game he loved.

His started his journey in the small town of Chelyan, West Virginia, and rose to NBA fame thanks to his incredible talent and determination. His passion for basketball began with a homemade hoop on a bridge, where he practiced and developed the skills that would amaze everyone.

At East Bank High School, West’s talent shone brightly, leading to an outstanding career at West Virginia University (WVU).

At WVU, West became a legend, setting 17 school records, including all-time scoring and rebounding. His leadership propelled the Mountaineers to their only NCAA Championship game appearance in 1959, cementing his status as a college basketball icon.

West’s professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers spanned 14 remarkable seasons, where he earned 14 All-Star selections and an NBA Championship in 1972. Known for his clutch performances, West remains the only player from a losing team to win the Finals MVP award, a testament to his undeniable impact on the game.

After hanging up his jersey, West’s influence continued to grow. As a general manager, he built the Showtime Lakers in the 1980s and played a pivotal role in bringing together Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in the 1990s. Kobe Bryant, who considered West the greatest Laker, credited him for his own success, highlighting West’s visionary leadership.

Despite his success, West never forgot his roots. His deep connection to West Virginia was evident in his generous support of WVU and his quiet dedication to his community. Bob Hertzel, a local sports writer, noted that West embodied the spirit of West Virginia, remaining humble and committed to his home state.

The news of Jerry West’s passing was met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the basketball community.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised West’s contributions, stating, “Jerry West was a true giant of our game. His impact on the NBA is immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be felt both on and off the court.”

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss also expressed her condolences, saying, “Jerry West’s influence on the Lakers and the entire NBA cannot be overstated. He was a visionary leader and a beloved member of the Lakers family. We will miss him dearly.”

In honor of West’s memory, West Virginia flags will be flown at half-staff until after West Virginia Day on June 20th. Fans, players, and colleagues from around the globe are commemorating West’s life, celebrating his contributions to basketball and his community.
