Tyla Dominates the 2024 BET Awards with her Performance and Major Wins
The 2024 BET Awards proved to be a defining moment for South African artist Tyla, who not only delivered a show-stopping performance but also walked away with multiple prestigious awards.
Held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the event was a celebration of musical excellence, and Tyla was at the forefront, captivating the audience with her talent and style.
Tyla’s performance of her hit single “Jump,” featuring Gunna and Skillibeng, was one of the evening’s most memorable highlights. The set design was nothing short of spectacular, featuring four women painted as different parts of a tiger, creating a lifelike illusion of the majestic animal.
She made a dramatic entrance on a rope swing, joining the tiger-themed cage and singing her viral lyric, “They never had a pretty girl from Joburg. See me now, and that’s what they prefurrr.”
The performance continued to enthrall as Gunna delivered his verse next to an elaborate elephant statue, and Skillibeng re-entered the stage escorted by men on stilts.
She danced gracefully underneath, adding to the visual grandeur of the performance.
The night was also a major triumph for Tyla in terms of accolades. She was nominated for four awards and won both the Best New Artist and Best International Act categories.
In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her gratitude and dedicated her awards to Africa and the African superstars who came before her.
“This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world, guys,” she said.
Her debut single, Water, which became a massive hit, was instrumental in her rise to fame, showcasing her unique blend of pop, R&B, and Afrobeat elements.
Her red carpet appearance was equally breathtaking. She wore a vintage Versace gown with stud detailing, an open-back, and a cutout halter neckline that dipped below her navel.
The gown, which featured an animal print lining and a dramatic front slit, was complemented by $230,000 worth of Jared Atelier natural diamonds. Her dazzling look included pear-shaped natural morganite and diamond drop earrings, a diamond ring, and a diamond tennis bracelet.
She continued to perform at significant events such as Spotify Beach at Cannes Lions and Afro Nation Portugal, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to her craft.
Tyla’s self-titled debut album, released in March 2024, has been a critical and commercial success, debuting at number 24 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Her unique sound, blending Afrobeat, R&B, and pop, has captivated listeners worldwide and earned her critical acclaim.
