“I Was Ghosted”: Billie Eilish Opens Up About Heartbreak and Fame
Billie Eilish recently opened up about a deeply personal experience that left her reeling: she was ghosted. The 22-year-old singer shared her story on the BBC podcast Miss Me? revealing the emotional turmoil and unexpected lessons that followed.
Ghosting, a term widely recognized in the modern dating lexicon, refers to the sudden cessation of communication by someone without any explanation.
Despite her global fame, she is not immune to this disheartening experience.
She recounted an incident from last December involving a long-time acquaintance who vanished without a trace. “It was insane,” she said.
“To this day, he never texted me again. I was like, did you die? Did you literally die?” Eilish was shocked to find out that the person had started dating someone else.
Ghosting can happen in any kind of connection. When someone suddenly stops communicating, it leaves the person who’s been ghosted feeling lost and hurt, without any closure.
Some think it’s a way to deal with the complexities of modern dating, while others see it as really upsetting because it doesn’t offer any answers.
Eilish’s ghosting experience is not an isolated emotional struggle.
She also discussed the broader impact of her early fame on personal relationships. Eilish shot to stardom at 14 with her debut single Ocean Eyes, a meteoric rise that drastically altered her social life. She admitted that fame led to the loss of many friends, leaving her feeling isolated.
“Well, I lost all of my friends when I got famous,” she shared. Her only constant companion was her best friend, Zoe. Other than Zoe, her social circle consisted of employees, a stark reminder of the distance fame can create.
She felt deeply hurt when an employee suddenly quit and cut off all contact. This made her realize that some of her relationships were purely transactional. Combined with the ghosting episode, it intensified her feelings of vulnerability and fear of being abandoned.
Over the past year, she reconnected with old friends and formed new bonds, creating a supportive circle she cherishes deeply.
“I have a crew now! I could literally cry about it. It’s been the greatest thing that’s happened to me,” she said, expressing her gratitude for this newfound camaraderie.
This emotional renaissance was so profound that she found herself in tears at a party, overwhelmed by the joy of having friends once again.
Also, music has always been a source of solace and inspiration for Eilish. She credited Lily Allen’s song Smile for motivating her to seek out and cherish new friendships. The lyrics, particularly the line “But with a little help from my friends / I found the light in the tunnel at the end,” resonated deeply with her.
Eilish confessed that she used to cry hearing that line, longing for the sense of support and companionship it described. Now, with her strengthened social ties, she can listen to the song with a sense of fulfillment and connection.
