Chappell Roan Transforms Into Swan Queen for Mesmerizing Tonight Show Performance with Jimmy Fallon
Last night, Chappell Roan wowed viewers with an amazing performance of her popular song Good Luck, Babe! on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Roan’s appearance on the show is an important step in her growing career, as she keeps winning over audiences with her unique style and strong singing.
Her performance on June 20th showed her artistic creativity, inspired by the 2003 Barbie of Swan Lake and mixed with her own theatrical touch.
During her interview with Fallon, she talked about her journey from working at a doughnut shop to becoming a pop star.
She showed a photo of herself performing on a small stage and said, “I had no money, and I was working at a doughnut shop,” showing how far she’s come.
When asked about her feelings on her rising fame, Roan responded with a laugh, “It feels like I was right all along. I mean, I feel kind of like I made it already when people showed up to my concert a few years ago. It was like, ‘people came?!’ Everything else has been the cherry on top.”
For her Tonight Show debut, she transformed into an ethereal swan, inspired by the 2003 Barbie of Swan Lake. Her stylist, Genesis Webb, and hairstylist, Dom Forletta, helped create this look.
Roan’s usual red curls were hidden under a big, bleach blonde wig, which was made fuller with extensions to match her natural hair. Forletta used a curling wand and hairpins to get the desired texture, and finished with volume spray.
Her makeup, done by Andrew Dahling, included covered eyebrows and feathers around her eyes to look like a swan. Her nails, made by Juan Alvear, looked like feathers, using Essie’s Artic Jelly and Buttercup Jelly for a gradient effect and decorated with ostrich feather wisps for extra flair.
Wearing outfits inspired by the White Swan Odette and the Black Swan Odile, Roan gave a strong performance that reminded some of Kate Bush’s theatrical style.
The stage had dry-ice fog and a large swan throne, creating a magical atmosphere that reinforced her reputation for elaborate and theatrical live shows.
Her performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” was just stunning. The powerful note at the end on “hate to say I told you so” particularly moved the audience, earning her applause.
She talked about her wide range of influences, including drag, horror movies, burlesque, and theater.
“We take ideas from drag, horror movies, burlesque, and theater,” she said to Fallon. “I love looking pretty and scary, or sometimes pretty and tacky, or even not pretty at all. I enjoy all of it.”
Fallon mentioned Roan’s reference to drag star Sasha Colby, who is famous for saying, “I’m your favorite drag queens’ favorite drag queen.” Roan clarified,
“I was talking about Sasha Colby,” and then smiled and said, “There are gay people here,” as the audience cheered.
She added, “It really touched me, and I thought, ‘I hope Sasha Colby watches me one day, and that’s why I said it.'”
Roan got her wish, as Colby shared the Tonight Show clip to her Instagram stories hours later.
