Tragic Explosion Shakes Youngstown, Ohio – Witness Accounts, Photos, and Videos Capture the Aftermath at Chase Bank

A devastating explosion rocked downtown Youngstown, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and injuring seven others.

The incident occurred at a building housing a Chase bank and residential apartments, located near Central Square. The explosion caused significant damage, leading to an extensive emergency response and a thorough investigation into its cause.

The explosion was reported around 2:45 PM on Tuesday.

Initial reports indicated a possible natural gas explosion, although the exact cause remains under investigation. Youngstown Fire Chief Barry Finley confirmed that crews were working to determine if a gas leak was involved. The blast was powerful enough to cause a partial building collapse, complicating rescue efforts.

Tragically, one person, a 27-year-old Chase Bank employee, was confirmed dead. His body was recovered from the rubble early Wednesday morning.

7 other individuals were injured, with one person in critical condition receiving treatment at Mercy Health. The severity of the injuries and the potential for more victims prompted an immediate and robust response from local emergency services.

After the explosion, everyone had to leave the building and the nearby streets were blocked off to cars. Market Street, Wick Avenue, and Federal Street were some of the big roads that got closed.

Unfortunately, the people who lived in the Realty Building where the explosion happened weren’t allowed to go back inside yet.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office is leading the investigation into the explosion’s cause. Enbridge Gas Ohio has confirmed that gas service to the building has been shut off and will not be restored until a structural engineer deems it safe. Other nearby buildings’ gas services remain unaffected.

Emergency crews continue to work on-site, conducting structural assessments and clearing debris. The potential for further collapse has necessitated the use of mini-drones to navigate the unstable areas. Additionally, video footage from a neighboring business’s security camera captured the moment of the explosion, providing crucial evidence for investigators.

The explosion has significantly disrupted downtown Youngstown.

Businesses, including bars, restaurants, and the WRTA bus services, have been temporarily closed or paused.

Youngstown State University, although not directly impacted, is monitoring the situation closely. County buildings and the Board of Elections also ceased operations early on Tuesday as a precaution.

Chase Bank has expressed its commitment to working closely with local officials to ensure the safety of everyone in the area and to determine the explosion’s cause. The bank’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of assessing the damage and understanding the incident to prevent future occurrences.
