Google is about to change how we deal with scam calls by adding AI-powered scam detection to its Phone app. This new feature, called Sharpie, uses Gemini Nano AI to find and block scam calls in real-time.

This new scam detection feature is a big improvement over what we have now.

Instead of just relying on reports from users and lists of known scammers, the new AI system will look at how calls behave, how voices sound, and other signs to spot scams as they happen. This should help us tell the difference between real calls, spam, and scams, giving us alerts during suspicious calls.

You will get alerts about possible scam calls right when they happen, letting you act quickly. You can also report scam calls yourself, which helps Google make the AI even better. This way, the app can keep up with new scam tricks and give us stronger protection.

One good thing about this feature is that it works directly on your phone, keeping your data private and secure. However, this might mean that only newer phones, like the Pixel 8 and the upcoming Pixel 9, can use it.

Google will let you choose whether to use this new scam detection feature or not. This means you can stick with your current call management methods if you prefer. But some recent discoveries suggest that it might automatically be turned on for certain phones, especially those managed under Family Link.

Adding AI-powered scam detection to the Google Phone app is a big step forward in keeping us safe from phone scams.

Scammers are always finding new ways to trick people, so having smart AI to help spot scams is really important. Google is setting a new standard for call protection, helping us all deal with the hassle of scam calls.
