J. Michael Cline died after falling from a high floor of the Kimberly Hotel
J. Michael Cline, the founder of Fandango, died tragically on July 16, 2024, after falling from a high floor of the Kimberly Hotel in New York City. He was 64 years old. Police confirmed it was an apparent suicide, but no criminal activity is suspected.
He was a successful entrepreneur known for his innovative spirit. He started Fandango in 2000, changing how people bought movie tickets online.
His company became famous for its orange ticket stub logo and easy-to-use website. Fandango quickly became a favorite for many moviegoers.
Before Fandango, Cline faced challenges. His first business, importing hand warmers from Japan, didn’t succeed. However, he didn’t give up.
He went on to create several other companies, including Accolade, a health services provider, and Acumen, which helped hospitals with lab operations.
Cline also invested in many startups through his venture capital firm, Accretive. At the time of his death, he was the executive chairman of Juxtapose, another venture capital fund.
Art Levitt, Cline’s co-founder and former chief operating officer of Fandango, remembered him fondly.
“He was brilliant, creative, and loyal, sticking it out even in tough times,” Levitt said. “He saw an opportunity in the market and made it a reality. His passion and dedication were unmatched.”
Aside from his business ventures, he was passionate about the environment. He served as chairman of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, supporting conservation efforts and wildlife protection. He was particularly interested in big cats and jaguars.
He owned homes in Palm Beach, Florida, Greenwich, Connecticut, and the Hamptons. Despite his wealth and achievements, he remained committed to giving back, donating to causes like the World Wildlife Fund.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela, and their six children. His death is a reminder of the importance of mental health support. If you or someone you know is in crisis, help is available through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
