The 18th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) has sparked a spirited conversation about the future of Indian animation on a global scale. Ketan Mehta, known for his work on Motu Patlu and leading Cosmos-Maya, emphasized the need for Indian animation to think beyond local audiences.

At a panel discussion moderated by Munjal Shroff, Mehta pointed out the challenge: “We’re stuck in a cycle where content made only for India doesn’t connect internationally.”

This sentiment was echoed by Mohammad Kherandish, who noted similar struggles in Iran’s animation industry due to limited local markets.

Vaibhav Kumaresh, creator of Lamput for Cartoon Network, emphasized the importance of stories that appeal worldwide.

“Animation needs themes and designs that everyone can relate to,” he said.

Jackky Bhagnani, a producer and actor, highlighted the need for better funding and distribution to showcase Indian talent globally.

Mehta also announced Kim, an animated adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s novel, aiming to showcase India’s culture globally. Looking ahead, panelists agreed on the importance of first succeeding at home before going global, citing Kumaresh’s upcoming film Return of the Jungle as an example.

As MIFF continues across cities like Kolkata and Chennai, the focus remains on nurturing creativity without borders.
