Marian Robinson, Steadfast Matriarch and Mother of Michelle Obama, Dies at 86
Marian Robinson, the beloved mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away peacefully on Friday at the age of 86.
Known for her steady presence and unwavering support for her family, Robinson’s death was announced by the Obama family in a heartfelt statement.
Born Marian Lois Shields on July 30, 1937, in Chicago, Robinson grew up as one of seven children on the city’s South Side. Her father, Purnell Shields, migrated from Alabama to escape the oppressive Jim Crow South, and her mother, Rebecca Jumper, worked as a nursing aide.
She pursued teaching before settling into a career as a secretary. She married Fraser Robinson III in 1960, and they had two children, Craig and Michelle.
Robinson’s life took a public turn when her son-in-law, Barack Obama, was elected President of the United States in 2008.
Despite initial hesitation, she moved to the White House in 2009 to help raise her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, providing them with stability amidst the pressures of political life. Robinson’s presence was described as a “steady backstop” for the family, offering a sense of normalcy and support during the Obama administration’s eight years.
“Just show me how to work the washing machine and I’m good,” she famously said upon moving into the White House, underscoring her down-to-earth nature and preference for privacy.
Despite the grandeur of her surroundings, Robinson maintained a humble lifestyle, often sneaking out to local stores and forming close bonds with the White House staff.
Her only special request was to meet Pope Francis, reflecting her modesty and reserved demeanor.
She was known for her profound wisdom and grace, qualities she shared with her family.
“Her wisdom came off as almost innate, as something she was born with, but in reality, it was hard-earned,” the Obama family stated.
She played an important role during Barack Obama’s historic 2008 election night, holding his hand as the results came in, symbolizing her support and strength.
Michelle Obama often spoke of her mother’s impact, crediting her with instilling confidence and independence. “I simply wouldn’t be who I am today without my mom,” Michelle stated.
This sentiment was echoed during a recent Mother’s Day tribute, where Michelle announced an exhibit in her mother’s honor at the Obama Presidential Center Museum in Chicago.
Robinson’s death was announced by the Obama family in a social media post. They said, “Marian Robinson passed away peacefully on Friday at 86, with her family by her side. Her wisdom, grace, and love helped us through tough times. We are grateful for her life and will strive to follow her example.“
In the wake of her passing, tributes have poured in from across the nation, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Robinson’s contributions to her family and country.
She is survived by her children, Craig and Michelle, her daughter-in-law Kelly, and her six grandchildren.
“In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example,” the family said.
