Iconic ‘Doge’ Meme Star, Shiba Inu Kabosu, Passes Away at 18

In a heartfelt announcement shared across social media platforms, Atsuko Sato, owner of the famed Shiba Inu Kabosu, confirmed the passing of her cherished companion.
Kabosu, who rose to global fame as the face of the iconic “Doge” meme and later inspired the creation of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge on the morning of May 24, 2024.
Her journey to internet stardom began in 2010 when Sato, a kindergarten teacher from Sakura in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, shared a photo of her with a quizzical expression on her blog. This single image captured the hearts of millions, sparking a viral sensation that would define an era of internet culture. Memes featuring Kabosu’s likeness, often accompanied by phrases like “much wow” and “such happy,” became ubiquitous across social media platforms, bringing joy and laughter to countless individuals worldwide.
In December 2013, her influence reached new heights with the creation of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by her endearing visage.
Initially conceived as a lighthearted parody of other digital currencies, Dogecoin quickly gained traction, evolving into a legitimate and valuable asset within the cryptocurrency market. Tragically, Kabosu’s health had been in decline, with Sato revealing in 2022 that the beloved Shiba Inu had been diagnosed with chronic lymphoma leukemia, a type of cancer, and acute cholangiohepatitis, a condition that inflames the liver and surrounding area. Despite Sato’s unwavering care and the support of Kabosu’s devoted fans, the courageous canine ultimately succumbed to her illnesses.In her final moments, Kabosu was surrounded by love and warmth, cradled in Sato’s embrace as she peacefully slipped away.
