Disney Drops First Full Trailer for Anticipated Sequel: Moana 2
Disney fans were thrilled at the D23 Expo as they got their first full look at Moana 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2016 film. The excitement reached its peak when Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, the voices behind Maui and Moana, took the stage to introduce the film’s trailer.
Johnson even joked that Maui is back to singing in “keys that don’t exist,” while Cravalho delighted in sharing Moana’s continued journey.
This time, Moana isn’t just exploring the ocean- she’s searching for new islands and other people, driven by a deep belief that the ocean connects everyone.
The story picks up three years after the first film, with Moana now taking on the role of a big sister to a new character, Simea, voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda. The introduction of Simea adds a fresh dynamic to Moana’s adventures, promising heartwarming moments and a new layer of depth to the story.
The return of familiar faces like Moana’s parents, voiced by Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger, and her grandmother Tala, voiced by Rachel House, brings a sense of continuity to the sequel.
Additionally, new characters such as Moana’s crew members and the mysterious Matangi promise to enrich the storyline with fresh challenges and allies. The villains, teased by Johnson, are expected to add more excitement and danger to Moana’s journey.
The film’s music is another highlight, with new songs like We’re Back set to capture the audience’s hearts. The soundtrack features contributions from Grammy-winning artists, ensuring that the music will be as unforgettable as in the first film.
The live performance of one of these new songs at D23, complete with drummers and dancers, left the audience buzzing with anticipation.
Moana 2 is directed by David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand, with Dana Ledoux Miller joining them as a co-director. Originally planned as a Disney+ series, the project was transformed into a full-length feature film, a decision that has only heightened fan excitement. The movie is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024, just in time for the holiday season.
In addition to Moana 2, Disney’s D23 Expo was filled with surprises, including sneak peeks at other upcoming films like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Incredibles 3.
Fans were also treated to updates on beloved franchises like Toy Story and Frozen, showcasing Disney’s commitment to delivering magical stories for years to come.
