What began as a vibrant Juneteenth celebration at Lake Merritt last night took a grim turn as gunfire erupted, leaving multiple individuals injured. The event, which drew approximately 5,000 attendees earlier in the evening, was disrupted by a sideshow involving motorcycles and vehicles at the intersection of Grand and Bellevue avenues around 8:15 p.m.
According to Oakland Police Department spokesperson Paul Chambers, a confrontation during the sideshow escalated into a shooting incident at approximately 8:45 p.m.
“Multiple shots rang out during a fight near the sideshow, resulting in injuries to several people,” Chambers stated during a press briefing.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and fear as the gunshots sent celebrants running for cover.
Tamia Robinson, who was present at the event, recounted, “We were all celebrating, there were sideshows, couple of fights that were going on – next thing we know, we all thought we heard fireworks, so we ran from the direction.”
“I saw people scrambling, trying to find safety,” added another witness, Marcus Johnson. “It was supposed to be a day of celebration, but it turned into a nightmare.”
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, with multiple ambulances transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
As of the latest reports, four individuals have been confirmed as gunshot victims, with additional injuries reported from the ensuing chaos. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported at this time.
In the aftermath of the incident, Oakland police officers faced challenges in restoring order amidst the panicked crowd. Chambers noted that officers were also targeted by individuals fleeing the scene, leading to at least one arrest for assaulting law enforcement.
“We were overwhelmed by the sudden escalation,” remarked Officer Jane Martinez, who was on duty at the event. “Our priority was to ensure people’s safety, but the situation escalated faster than we anticipated.”
This incident marks a troubling recurrence, echoing a similar shooting during a Juneteenth celebration at Lake Merritt in 2021, which resulted in injuries and fatalities. The Oakland Police Department has launched an investigation into the shooting and appealed to the public for any video footage or information that could assist in identifying those responsible.
Community members have expressed concerns over safety protocols and the need for enhanced security measures during large-scale events.
Despite the violence, the spirit of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, continues to resonate strongly in Oakland and across the nation.
Organizers of the Juneteenth celebration had coordinated with local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable event, including a significant police presence. However, the rapid escalation of events underscored the challenges in managing large crowds and unexpected disturbances.
In response to criticisms about police response time and crowd control, Chambers reiterated the department’s commitment to reviewing protocols and improving coordination for future events. He urged witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
