The war between Russia and Ukraine has taken a surprising turn. Ukrainian soldiers have crossed into Russia, taking control of parts of Russian land. This is a big change in the war, which has been going on since 2014.

Last week, Ukrainian forces attacked Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions. Because of this, a state of emergency was declared in these areas. Belgorod’s Governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said the situation is “extremely difficult and tense.” There have been daily attacks with shells and drones, damaging homes and killing or injuring civilians. This is the first time since World War II that foreign troops have entered Russia.

In response, Russia increased security, especially around important sites like the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. Russia’s National Guard, known as Rosgvardiya, has taken extra steps to protect the plant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and military leader Oleksandr Syrskii said their forces have made significant progress. They now control about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian land and have taken control of 74 settlements. Nearly 200,000 Russian civilians have had to leave their homes because of these attacks.

Russia has been surprised by this attack and is struggling to stop it. Even though Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to push the Ukrainian soldiers out of Russia, they are still moving forward, causing problems for the Russian government.

The Ukrainian attack has caught the attention of leaders around the world. US President Joe Biden said this move is a big challenge for Putin. The White House quickly made it clear that the United States did not know about or help with the attack. Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said the U.S. had no involvement in Ukraine’s action.

This attack by Ukraine has changed the way the war is being fought. By attacking Russia directly, Ukraine hopes to force Russia into a peace agreement that respects Ukraine’s borders.

This attack has caused a lot of suffering. Thousands of Russian civilians have had to leave their homes, and many buildings have been destroyed. The daily attacks have created fear in these areas.

This move by Ukraine might change the course of the war. While Russia has managed to stop some of the attacks, Ukraine’s ability to push into Russian territory shows a shift in power. The next few weeks will be very important in deciding whether this leads to more fighting or a chance for peace talks.
