On May 31, 2024, Baraboo High School's graduation ceremony was disrupted by an unexpected altercation.
Matthew Eddy, a parent of one of the graduates, rushed the stage and aggressively confronted Superintendent Dr. Rainey Briggs.
Dr. Briggs described in his restraining order petition that Eddy pushed him while yelling, “You are not going to touch my (expletive) daughter.”
The incident happened in front of thousands, leaving the audience and graduates stunned. School resource officers and two off-duty officers intervened to manage the situation.
A video of the altercation went viral, with many condemning Eddy's actions as racist. Wisconsin State Representative Francesca Hong was among those who spoke out.
Dr. Briggs filed a restraining order against Eddy, which was granted. Eddy was cited for disorderly conduct, with charges referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.
The Baraboo School District emphasized their commitment to safety and condemned the parent’s behavior, stressing that no employee should fear for their safety.
Despite the incident, the district reaffirmed its focus on celebrating the achievements of the graduates, ensuring their hard work isn't overshadowed by the event.
